Stop chasing momentum, start training smarter

You can’t sit around waiting for momentum or motivation to magically kick in. They feel great when they show up, but they never stay long enough to build real progress. What actually keeps you moving is a simple system you can stick to. One that works on your busy days, your tired days, and the days when training feels like the last thing you want to do.

And it definitely doesn’t mean smashing yourself every day. That go hard or go home mindset is exactly what leads to burnout and injury. I’ve done it. More than once. So instead of learning the hard way like I did, take a breath and read on. These tips will help you train smarter, stay injury free, and fit movement into real life rather than an unrealistic routine.

When You Push Too Hard, Something Always Gives

You go to the gym in morning, then work all day. Head home and go for a run. The next day its a karate or boxing or crossfit class after a gruelling days work. Intervals on Wed morning and you sat at your desk ALL day then came home and had to take the kids to soccer practice and helped fill in for the coach that night. And on and on it goes. The weekend comes around and you train in the morning, do gardening and all those “to do” list jobs that you have been putting on and then compete on Sunday. You are amazing! Or not... All you are doing is setting yourself for injury. And it won’t be at the gym. It will be when you pick your son up off the ground after he trips and scrapes his knee. All you did was bend over. But your muscles were so over worked that they couldn’t handle that one last little movement.

You Can’t Sprint Your Way Through Life

You can't run a marathon at full pace for the whole time, so why do it in life?
You can't run a marathon at full pace for the whole time, so why do it in life?

You cannot train everything every week. Your body will not handle it. Look at your plan over a 2 week or 4 week level. What is your goal? Where do you have busy days at work or with the family? Build up your training over the week or month, or have a mix of fast or heavy days and others that are light or slow.

Recovery Is Where Real Strength Happens

Build recovery and low impact days into your week and training plan. It is not weak. It actually means you will be fitter, stronger and faster as you will be letting your body do what it needs to do: recover and adapt! Things like swimming, yoga, pilates, take a walk instead of doing a run. It is also good for your overall stress levels!

Don’t think that you can do it all and keep going. When you are injured, you will wish you had that recovery day. You will think back to that morning when your calf was a little tight and you thought “it’s just a niggle” and it kept niggling. Regret is not fun. Take the time to plan, slow down and recover. Build yourself to be #FitterFasterStrongerMpowered
